Grant Sperry is a Forensic Document Examiner with over 32 years of continuous training and experience in the forensic document examination profession. Mr. Sperry began his career as a forensic document examiner with the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory, where he successfully completed a two year in-residence structured course in forensic document examination.
Mr. Sperry has been privy to hundreds of hours of additional on-site training at various federal and state agencies, including the FBI, CIA, US Secret Service and Immigration and Naturalization Laboratory. Continuous training and testing on a yearly basis through seminars and professional meetings have enhanced Mr. Sperry’s education and abilities as technology and the nature of questioned document problems have evolved. Mr. Sperry has authored and presented numerous papers at various professional meetings and is published in peer reviewed journals.
Mr. Sperry has been active for many years in several well established professional organizations. Mr. Sperry is currently a Director of the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners (ABFDE) and is a past president of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners.
As a forensic document examiner, Mr. Sperry has examined hundreds of thousands of documents related to thousands of criminal and civil cases. He has testified as an expert in the field of forensic document examination and/or digital image processing on over 325 occasions in various state, federal and military courts.
Mr. Sperry’s professional qualifications have been reviewed and accepted by numerous federal, military and state courts in North America and Europe. He was certified by the U.S. Army’s Criminal Investigation Command as a forensic document examiner upon successfully passing the requisite testing and academic requirements of the two year in-residence course in forensic document examination.
Having met the stringent criteria for testing, Mr. Sperry successfully passed the written, practical and oral tests of the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners (ABFDE), and was awarded a Certificate of Qualification in Forensic Document Examination in 1989. The ABFDE has since reviewed Mr. Sperry’s qualifications and continuing education on a regular basis.
Mr. Sperry has worked as a forensic document examiner and section chief with the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory, followed by employment with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service as a forensic document examiner and laboratory manager.
Grant Sperry established Forensic Document Examination Services (FDES) in 1995 while employed as a forensic document examiner with the United States Postal Inspection Service. Subsequent to his tenure with the US Postal Inspection Service’s laboratory in 2006; Mr. Sperry continues in private practice to provide consultant and examination services in matters related to a wide array of questioned document problems.
